Finding Your Why
In our short lives, we often ask – Why? Why do we strive, create, and live? As we journey through life as solopreneurs, artists, creators, or just people seeking ultimate fulfillment, finding your why becomes essential.
The Impermanence of Life
Life is temporary. Our memories, identities, and everything tied to our physical existence will eventually disappear. Even though recognizing this can be unsettling, this awareness can help us find our ‘why’. It urges us to make the most of our one life and strive for something meaningful despite the inevitable end.
The Pursuit of Self-Actualization
Abraham Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs ends with self-actualization, the desire to reach our full potential. But how do we create a project or life aiming for self-actualization? How do we make it our ‘master project’?
Finding your ‘why’ requires deep self-inquiry. It’s about exploring your values, motivations, and what you believe is worth the struggle. It’s not just about seeking pleasure or avoiding pain… but about creating something meaningful, something beautiful enough to justify its existence, even in the face of impermanence.
The Middle Way
What about the pitfalls along the way? Both extremes – seeking pleasure and avoiding it – are dangerous. Greek philosophers and Buddha advocated for the ‘middle way’, a balanced approach applicable to many life aspects.
Facing Death: A Tool for Clarity
Death, the ultimate certainty, can bring clarity and prioritization. When I was 13 my father died unexpectedly. It was the first time I faced the harsh reality of impermanence. It made me question my existence and pursuits. At that point I decided I wanted to become the best version of myself, and find a way to cope with death, to understand and trascend it.
This lead me to a long-term spiritual quest, which eventually led me to an ego-death insight. This led me to radically question all the ‘whys’ of existence and everything I thought was true. I realized that much of my motivation was driven by arbitrary constructs that didn’t truly matter. It was a wake-up call to find a new ‘why’, a reason to move forward that was more than just egotistical or pleasure-seeking.
Your Why: A Powerful Justification
In the end, finding your ‘why’ is about creating a life and project worth the pain. It’s about crafting something so powerful that it justifies its existence, even in the face of death and impermanence. It’s about self-realization and creating a project that fulfills your unique potential.
So, how will you use your time? How will you create a life worth living? How will you find your ‘why’? Remember, you have the power to shape your journey and make it the master project of your life. Let’s make it worthwhile.
