What is Memento Mori?
This episode is a practice of memento mori, a roman concept meaning “remember that you will die”. It’s known that roman generals or emperors would assign a slave to whisper them memento mori during their triumphal processions, just to counteract the natural tendency to become prideful and arrogant. This phrase also guided the Roman emperor Augustus towards recognizing that all his power, wealth, and grandeur would eventually banish, making him become more focused on matters of wisdom, humility and legacy.
We don’t know what death truly is, but we can assume that is a moment of ending and reviewing, of finishing. An opportunity to review and transition to the unknown.
Memento Mori, or reminding yourself of your own death is an opportunity to see what’s truly important for you, what are your dearest values and loved beings. To reconnect with life, making it more rich and meaningful.
The invitation is clear: Reflecting on death serves as a reminder of life’s impermanence, urging us to prioritize our desires and fulfillment in the present. The quest for higher fulfillment begins now, in this life, and not in any imagined future.
